It’s easy to forget that this Spartan, violent film, which begat the Rambo series, was such a big hit in 1982 because it was a good movie. Green Beret vet John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) wanders into the wrong small town to find a fellow ‘Nam buddy and gets the living heck kicked out of him by the local law enforcement (led by Brian Dennehy). The vet strikes back the only way he knows how, leading to a visceral, if unrealistic, flight and fight through the local mountains. Based on the 1972 novel by David Morrell, this film saved Stallone’s then-foundering career and the Rambo character became the inspiration for countless political cartoons. Andrew Divoff returns as the evil Djinn bent on world domination in this direct-to-video sequel to Wishmaster. Released from his prison gem during a failed museum robbery, Djinn transforms from a gooey blob to a demon in human form after granting his first venom-laced wish and takes the rap for the heist and a couple of murders. Meanwhile Morgana (Holly Fields, looking like a B-movie version of Angelina Jolie, without the lips) is haunted by nightmares of the demon and discovers the meaning behind his command, “Fulfill the prophecy”: he needs to bag 1,000 souls and then he’s Armageddon bound. Like its predecessor, Wishmaster 2 twists the classic genie-in-the-lamp legend into a sick joke; every wish is granted in the most literal terms, leaving the recipients victims of their own greed and desire in often gory spectacles. The budgetary constraints are evident in the more ambitious effects, notably a calamity of biblical proportions in a Las Vegas casino with computer-animated locusts and unconvincing dismemberments. Divoff makes a low-rent Freddy Krueger, tossing off pale quips with a tight grin and in a raspy, self-important monotone in this A Nightmare on Elm Street knockoff. The plot device is so damned great that it simply had to be revisited: a scientist invents a device that transmits matter by disintegrating it in one chamber and reintegrating it in another. When he attempts to transmit his own body, he accidentally allows a fly into the chamber, and the resulting man-insect hybrid runs rampant across the Canadian countryside. Philippe, the son of that ill-fated scientist, is told the family history by a benevolent uncle (an oddly prim Vincent Price); possessed with the scientific will-to-know, he becomes determined to re-create his father’s experiments. The legendarily silly costuming of the original Fly returns, and with it, the perplexing logic of transmogrification–it becomes difficult to decipher which of the man-insect hybrids we’re meant to understand as possessing Phillipe’s agency. The film is hampered by the lack of a strong female lead, and by performances by all principals that are disappointingly modern in their clear motivation and restraint. Almost normal–even by modern standards–Return of the Fly represents an interesting bridging piece between the arty, abstract, symbolist sci-fi aesthetic of the early ’50s and the naturalist, highly mimetic, realist style that quickly came to dominate the genre. –Miles Bethany

Summary of Reap the Wild Wind:

John Wayne was in the early stages of superstardom when this lavish Cecil B. DeMille adventure was produced in 1942, so it’s interesting to see the Duke in a heroic supporting role as opposed to the commanding one. Here he’s on equal footing with Ray Milland in the romantic lead; they play a pair of dashing yet wildly different characters who’ve both fallen for a feisty Southern belle played by Paulette Goddard. It’s 1840 on Florida’s Key West, and while Wayne plays a daring seaman eager to command a brand-new steamship, his ambitions are hampered by his daredevil reputation and the ruthless profiteering of a salvager (Raymond Massey) who preys on ships that are routinely wrecked in the Key’s rocky coastal waters. Milland plays the dapper gentleman who can decide Wayne’s future, but Wayne’s competitive edge leads to a progression of apparent betrayals and shifting allegiances. Ultimately, both men cast aside their differences to seek justice on the open sea, where an underwater encounter with a giant octopus threatens to bury them both in a watery grave. Providing spectacle and romance as only DeMille could serve it up, this blustery adventure has its share of corny dialogue and obligatory crowd-pleasing action, but that’s all part of the movie’s considerable charm. It’s like Gone with the Wind on the open sea, with the high-spirited Goddard (who had been a candidate for the role of Scarlett O’Hara) holding her own with her chest-thumping costars. DeMille fills his frame with delightful characters and background business, spicing up the story with just enough humor and hokum to offset the movie’s forgivable flaws. Presented in glorious Technicolor that’s been flawlessly preserved on DVD, the film earned Oscar nominations for its cinematography and costumes, and its still-exciting climax earned an Oscar for Best Special Effects. All in all, this is rousing Hollywood entertainment from the peak years of the studio system that DeMille had dominated for decades. –Jeff Shannon.
