The premise of The Guys is simple: A fire captain (Anthony LaPaglia), who lost eight firemen in the fall of the World Trade Center, asks a journalist (Sigourney Weaver) to help him compose eulogies for these men. It’s only a week after the attack; their bodies haven’t yet been found, but the families are holding services. The writer cajoles the sometimes inarticulate and plain-spoken captain into talking about the men–who range from the captain’s best friend to a newcomer he’d only know a few weeks–until she’s gleaned enough to piece together a tribute. Originally a play by Anne Nelson, the movie captures much of the texture of New York through montages woven into the storyline; but the piece lives or dies by the performances, and both Weaver and LaPaglia give subdued and unfancy but carefully wrought performances that make the most of this potent material. –Bret Fetzer

Poirot - Hickory Dickory Dock Review! Watch Online!

When a series of bizarre thefts at a boarding house leads to murder, it takes Hercule Poirot all of his ingenuity to solve a series of interlocking mysteries and unmask the killer. This feature-length Poirot mystery shows why David Suchet is the definitive screen version of Agatha Christie’s dapper Belgian sleuth. With his fastidious habits and thick French accent it would be easy to turn Poirot into a caricature, but Suchet makes him funny without diminishing the detective’s brilliance. Poirot’s peculiarity is a perfect disguise, and when he sets out for the murder scene in his immaculate clothes–like a shiny black beetle bustling through the drab, brown London streets–there is little doubt that the crime will soon be solved.

Hickory Dickory Dock reaches its climax, naturellement, with the detective and his suspects gathered tensely in a drawing room. Although the story suffers from some clumsily introduced clues (Christie suffers here in comparison with writers like P.D. James), the denouement works well, keeping us guessing while allowing the more astute viewer to spot the killer before Poirot makes his announcement. –Simon Leake

I also think Philip Jackson (II) was great! The visuals and graphics make for some very realistic on screen special-effects but that is the beauty of the movie.When the movie wants to be funny it is funny, the same is true for when the movie needs to deliver its scary aspects.

Carl Reiner made this enjoyable romantic farce about a divorced couple who commence an affair at their daughter’s wedding. Reiner lets the idea bounce around the story’s setting and characters so that the full comic effect of the illicit relationship can be felt more chaotically, building on its own irony. Bette Midler and Dennis Farina are quite believable and likable as the not-so-estranged-anymore couple, and Paula Marshall is very good as their exasperated daughter. Not a masterpiece, but one of Reiner’s best films in years, with a distinctively European flavor to the comedy. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, cast and crew bios, theatrical trailer, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. –Tom Keogh
