Iron Island is a movie that everyone can enjoy together.This is something not usually seen in movies of this type, so it makes it an unusual, yet pleasant experience.The movie is absolutely beautiful and Ali Nassirian deliver some award winning performances in this movie. I also think Hossein Farzi-Zadeh was great!

A huge, abandoned oil tanker becomes its own world as squatters make their lives upon it. Presiding over this haphazard society is Captain Nemat (Ali Nassirian), a leader who’s part visionary, part supply sergeant, part snake oil salesman. As he bounds up and down the tanker’s halls and stairways, he charmingly persuades the families living in rusted rooms to obey his rules while he hustles the goods they all need to survive. But this microcosm is threatened from within (the ship is slowly sinking) and without (the owners want to sell it for scrap metal), forcing Nemat to seek a radical solution. Meanwhile, Nemat’s protege Ahmad (Hossein Farzi-Zadeh, The Beautiful City) has fallen in love with a girl who’s already promised to marry another man. While Iron Island can be read as an allegory about life in the Muslim world, life on board the tanker feels organic and follows its own internal logic, making the movie vivid and vital. The movie’s political conundrums feel implacably real and have no easy or absolute solution. But Nassirian is the movie’s core; he holds Iron Island together with the same unquenchable drive that Nemat uses to hold together his ship-bound kingdom. Altogether, a rich and compelling film. –Bret Fetzer

In this epic mini-series based on Jules Verne’s novel, Englishman Phileas Fogg (Pierce Brosnan) prides himself on his clockwork discipline. Another early kung fu flick from Jackie Chan’s Wei Lo period (Wei Lo, who also directed Fists of Fury with Bruce Lee, directed seven of Chan’s early films), Spiritual Kung Fu (alternatively titled Karate Ghostbuster) has Chan playing a familiar character–the bumbling underdog. Chan is a Shaolin monastery student whose fighting style and wits aren’t quite up to par. Dissension and panic arise in the temple when a thief steals the book of the Seven Fist Style, a form of kung fu that allegedly makes its masters invincible. While guarding the temple’s library, Chan comes across a lost book that teaches the Five Style Fists, which can defeat the Seven Fist Style. What’s more, the book comes with five mischievous spirits that teach the style to Chan. When the monastery is challenged by the man who stole the Seven Fist Style, the spirits help Chan defeat him. The DVD transfer and voice dubbing are more akin to a Saturday afternoon television matinee than a technical tour de force, but the story certainly lends itself to its presentation. A campy and uneven effort (what else can you say about a movie in which spirits don white body paint and bright red fright wigs?), Spiritual Kung Fu, like the Wei Lo-directed Half a Loaf of Kung Fu, was shelved for a couple of years before being released in 1978. –Shannon Gee

Krypto’s challenges include saving a ship full of zoo animals, battling a Kryptonian superflea, dealing with a giant caterpillar, and saving a helpless (or so he thinks) kitten from a pack of super-powered dogs called the Dog Stars. Krypto’s contributing talent includes Alan Burnett and Paul Dini of the well-regarded Superman and Batman animated series, but it’s aimed at a much younger crowd. An art-house film filled with more humor and skilled acting than most Hollywood blockbusters, Ten Canoes is a wry story within a story. The tone of the film is set when narrator David Gulpilil (Crocodile Dundee) says, “Once upon a time in a land far, far away….” He stops himself with a warm, hearty chuckle and adds, “I’m only joking.” Director Rolf de Heer does a fine job with his cast of novice actors, who depict a life most moviegoers are unfamiliar with. Set in Australia’s far northern Arnhem Land, the film–which won the Special Jury Prize at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival–tells the tale of friendship, deception, and forbidden love. Ten tribesmen venture on a trip where they will build canoes, gather food, and gossip about their sexual prowess and their wives. During the trip, Minygululu (Peter Minygululu) regales his younger brother Dayindi (played by David Gulpilil’s son, Jamie Gulpilil) with stories of a man who lusts after his older sibling’s wife. It is giving nothing away to reveal that Dayindi has a crush on Minygululu’s youngest bride. Handled differently, the film could’ve been saddled with the ick factor of siblings chasing after the same young woman. But the way de Heer presents it, it is a parable that distinguishes between right and wrong, in an entertaining and non-judgmental way. Cinematographer Ian Jones is to be commended for his amazing work. He frames the shots in a superb fashion and showcases the raw beauty of the land–and the people–that time has forgotten. –Jae-Ha Kim

This is like Mean Girls via Caged Heat as written by Jess Franco and directed by Russ Meyer. All those Takashi Miike fans need to check out this film.

This was the final entry in the Zubeko Bancho series, with sexy-and-sweet Reiko Oshida heading up a cast of gangster-girl wannabes in a go-go dancing maelstrom of Japanese music, fashion and kitsch. Truly a film that defies description, but imagine a Jack Hill production of Hair with an unsupervised Riot Girl cast, and you’re starting to get the picture. The result is a delicious example of Japanese pop culture in high transition from the groovy ’60s to the dangerous ’70s.
