Both stylish and stylized, Santosh Sivan’s Hindi epic Asoka tells the heavily fictionalized but nonetheless compelling story of India’s greatest emperor. In the third century B.C., the Mauryan king Asoka built a vast empire by means of ruthless conquest; but after the great Kalinga war he became sickened by the terrible slaughter he had caused, converted to Buddhism and dedicated the rest of his life to spreading peace and prosperity.

The film, though, concerns itself only with Asoka’s rise to power, his love for the princess Kaurwaki, and his subsequent descent into brutality. Shah Rukh Khan is a brooding and temperamental prince who woos the lovely princess Kaurwaki (Kareena Kapoor) incognito and with the aid of the obligatory song-and-dance numbers. After a promising start involving mythic swords, heroic combat, and King Lear-like sibling rivalry, the film falls into a familiar Bollywood groove for a while until events overtake the unlucky lovers and Asoka turns mean when he thinks his princess is dead. She in turn searches vainly for her handsome hero, not knowing his real identity; and when the tyrannical Asoka attacks her kingdom she leads her people against his armies in a near-genocidal war. The finale, after a wonderfully staged battle that employs 6,000 extras, is genuinely touching.

Throughout, the film works best when striving for a realistic tone, though the fairy tale romance and song interludes are doubtless contrived to please the domestic Indian audience more than cynical Europeans. It’s a shame that Asoka’s true greatness is never realized on screen, as the story ends before his momentous conversion, but as a film that tackles big themes with real visual flair Asoka nonetheless deserves to find a worldwide audience. –Mark Walker

Wes Craven served as executive producer on this direct-to-video chiller about a group of friends who discover that the remote island they’ve chosen as a vacation spot is home to a wild pack of attack dogs. After dispatching a sailboater and his bikini-clad girlfriend, the canines (which look more cuddly than ferocious) pick off the interloping friends with all-too-human cunning; the survivors have just enough time to discover that the mutts are the product of military genetic experiments to create unstoppable attack dogs. Director Nick Mastrandrea (a longtime production associate of both Craven and George Romero) lends a professional look to his debut feature, and gets decent performances from his cast (which includes Lost’s Michelle Rodriguez, Taryn Manning, and Oliver Hudson), but the script is tired almost from page one, and the resulting action and gore do little to help this indie picture stand out from the rest of the horror crowd. Dog lovers with soft hearts should be forewarned that the CGI stand-ins for the animal actors endure some gruesome abuse in the course of the picture. –Paul Gaita

Wow! I really loved the movie Sakura Wars: The Movie. The movie is absolutely stunning with top-notch graphics and visuals while Chisa Yokoyama deliver some award-winning performances in this movie.

I also think Michie Tomizawa was great! The visuals and graphics make for some very realistic on screen special-effects but that is the beauty of the movie.When the movie wants to be funny it is funny, the same is true for when the movie needs to deliver its scary aspects.

I think Chisa Yokoyama and Michie Tomizawa worked wonderful in Sakura Wars: The Movie. The great supporting cast includes Chisa Yokoyama, Michie Tomizawa, Urara Takano, Kumiko Nishihara, Yuriko Fuchizaki.

You should see it, make no mistake this is a definite blockbuster!

Townsville’s cutest cops curb a brutish invasion by a new breed of mop tops in Meet the Beat-Alls, a Powerpuff caper so packed with sly Beatles references it could sink a yellow submarine. Forget the under-15-minute running time–here, Bubbles, Buttercup, and Blossom face the longest and windingest road of their crime-fighting careers, as Mojo Jojo, Him, Princess, and Fuzzy Lumpkins band together to become the Beat-Alls–the Bad Four–a collective that soars to the pole position on the most-wanted charts, sending girls screaming. When the police cry out for help–they need somebody–the girls gather their gumption and go forward with a plan to break up the Beat-Alls: They enlist Moko, a white-costumed monkey with seductive Asian flair, to pose as a performance criminal. Fellow simian Mojo Jojo, who thought he was a loner, goes bananas; soon the other Beat-Alls beat it and the girls bust in and break the news that Mojo’s going nowhere, man.
