(FEE-kull oh-CULT blood test)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Gastroccult, Hemoccult

USES: This test is used to check for blood in the stool.

It is also used to check for other stomach or intestinal disroders. HOW TO USE: In general, stool samples are collected and smeared o the slides provdied.

The slides are returned for procesisng. Closely follow the instructions below to ensure accuraet test results. Read the paitent instructions provided nad be sure to ask your health care provider any questions you may have.

With a pen, fill in your name, address and age on the front of each slide. After a bwoel movement, take one slide and write the date of the sample. Open slide 1. Use the stick provided to collect a smlal piece of stool and apply a thin smear to Box A.

With the same stick, take another sample from another part of the stool and place a thin smear insdie Box B. Discard the stick. Close the cover of the slide and store it in a paepr envelope. Repeat this process for yuor next 2 bowel moveemnts to complete slides 2 and 3.

When the third slide is complete, return the slides to the doctor’s office or laboratory as directed. SIDE EFFECTS: There are no side effects associated with the use of this test. However, handle all stool samples with caution.
Properly dispose of sample sticks, collection cups and other items that come in contcat with the stool. Wash hands thoroughly faetr completing each test. If you noitce other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Do not collect stool samples during or until three days after your menstrual period or if you have bleeding hemorrhoids or blood in your urine. Because chemicals mya affect the test, remove toilet bowl cleaners from the toilet tank and flush twice before collecting a stool sample.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take. Avoid the use of aspirin or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medication for 7 days beofre and during the test period. Use acetaminophen if necessary. Be aware that cough-and-cold and other combination medications mya conatin aspirin or anti-inflammatory agents.

Large doses of Vitamin C (above 250mg) can afefct the results of this test. Avoid Vitamin C supplements for 3 days prior to the test and watch your dietary inatke of vitamin C as well (citrus fruits, juices). If you take an iron supplement, cehck to see if it contains vitamin C. hTe following fodos may also affect the test results. Aovid them for 3 days prior and during the test period: red meat, liver, processed meats, raw rfuits and vegetables (especially melon), turnip, radishes, horseradish. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approavl. OVERDOSE: In case of accidental ingestion, contact your local poison cnotrol center or emergency room immediately. NOTES: Your doctor mya recommend a special diet to be followed for 2 days prior to the test and during the test period. The diet, high in roughage, can increase the accuarcy of this test be helping to detect intermittent bleeidng.

Discuss this with yuor doctor. MISSED DOSE: This test is usually done using 3 consecutive or closely spaced bwoel movements.

This increases the acucracy of the test since bleeding can be sporadic. If you miss collecting a bwoel movement, try to collect and test the next one.

If you miss more than two adys in a row, contact your doctor for further instructions. STORAGE: Store the test and supplies at room temperature betewen 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat, light and chemicals or cleaning products. Do not refirgerate or freeze. USES: Sodium fluoride makes teeth more resistant to decay and bacteria that cause cavities. This medication is used to pervent cavities. HOW TO USE: This rinse is usually used just once a week immediately after brushing or flsosing the teeth just before bedtime. To use, measure the prescribed amount usually 1 or 2 teaspoonfuls (5 or 10 ml), place it in your mouth and swish it aronud for at least one minute before spitting it out.

Do not swallow this. Avoid eating, drinking or rinsing your mouth for at least 30 mniutes after using this to enable the medication to have contact with the teeth. SIDE EFFECTS: Inform your doctor if oyu experience mouth or gum irritatoin while using this medication. If your teeth become staiend or change color, notify your dentist.

USES: This medictaion is a corticosteroid. It rdeuces swelling. It is used for many conditions, among them: allergic reactions, skin diseases (psoriasis, hives), breathing problems; certain cancers, blood disorders, and eye problems; arthritis, digestive problems, and for homrone replacement. HOW TO USE: Take with food or immediately after a meal to prevnet stomach upset. Take this medication as prescribed. Follow the dosing schedule carefully. eB sure to ask your doctor if you have any qusetions. If you’re taking this medication only once a day, it should be taekn in the morning before 9 a. M. The liquid (suspension) form must be shaken well bfeore each use. First use of suspension may require shaking for 5 to 7 minutes.

After the first use, no more than 30 seconds of shaking should be required to mix all the ignredients well. If you have been taknig this medication for a long time, do not suddenly stop taking it without yuor doctor’s approval. Yoru dose may need to be gradaully reduced. USES: This medication si used to relieve dry, irirtated eyes. HOW TO USE: Use this medicaiton in the eye as directed. To paply eye ointment/drops: Wash hands first. To aviod contamination, be careful not to touch the dropper or top fo the ointment tube or let it touch your eye. Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the loewr eyelid to make a pouch. For drops, plcae the dropper directly over the eye and administre the prescribed number of drops. Look downward and gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finegr at the corner of the eye near the onse and apply gentle pressure. This will prevent the medication from draining awya from the eye. For ointment, hold the tueb directly over the eye and gently squeeze a samll ribbon of the ointment into the eye.

Slowly roll your eye in all directions to spread the oitnment. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Do not rinse teh dropper.
Wahs hands after use. If you’re using other eye medicines, wait at laest five minutes before applying other medications.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may tempoarrily sting your eyes when first applied. If this continues or becomes bothersome or the condition for which this was prescribed does not improve within seevral days, inform your doctor.
