Mr. Bean meets Mr. Bond in Johnny English, a spy spoof that skewers the genre with Rowan Atkinson’s trademark brand of veddy-British slapstick. It’s a bit half-baked as a wannabe franchise, but Atkinson’s creation of a new screen persona is just promising enough to warrant a sequel, despite critics’ complaints that Austin Powers had already exhausted the spy-spoof’s potential. Poppycock! Atkinson’s gift for physical and, in this case, even verbal humor will surely please his devoted fans, even when a rather tepidly comedic screenplay prevents the British funnyman from reaching new heights of absurdity. As bumbling superspy Johnny English, who gains top-level MI-7 clearance after inadvertently causing a colleague’s demise, Atkinson breathes life into gags that are too familiar to earn such an amusing revival. With John Malkovich as a smarmy Frenchman determined to overthrow the British monarchy, and Natalie Imbruglia as Johnny’s comely comrade-in-arms, this slight but enjoyable comedy gives Atkinson plenty of opportunity to mug it up as only he can. –Jeff Shannon

Summary of Happiness:

At times brilliant and insightful, at times repellent and false, Happiness is director Todd Solondz’s multistory tale of sex, perversion, and loneliness. Plumbing depths of Crumb-like angst and rejection, Solondz won the Cannes International Critics Prize in 1998 and the film was a staple of nearly every critic’s Top Ten list. Admirable, shocking, and hilarious for its sarcastic yet strangely empathetic look at consenting adults’ confusion between lust and love, the film stares unflinchingly until the audience blinks. But it doesn’t stop there. A word of strong caution to parents: One of the main characters, a suburban super dad (played by Dylan Baker), is really a predatory pedophile and there is more than an attempt to paint him as a sympathetic character. Children are used in this film as running gags or, worse, the means to an end. Whether that end is a humorous scene for Solondz or sexual gratification for the rapist becomes largely irrelevant. Happiness is an intelligent, sad film, revelatory and exact at moments. It’s also abuse in the guise of art. That’s nothing to celebrate. –Keith Simanton

But soon the child is forced to disclose a dreaded secret–one that effectively renders him a person of no value according to Chinese custom. In the king’s eyes, the kid goes from “beloved grandson” to “stupid crook,” and both the old man and the child must pay dearly for his bigotry before they can know joy again. The Majestic is an old-fashioned throwback replete with a 1950s B-script and halcyon values like patriotism, true love, and clean fun. Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is a Hollywood scriptwriter with a sexy gal, a screenplay under his belt, and his big break on the horizon. But when his name is mistakenly given to the House Un-American Activities Committee, Appleton’s dreams of success in the biz quickly unravel. An ensuing car accident leaves him without a memory but a great opportunity–as a small town’s Luke Trimble, war hero and all-around swell guy, with whom he happens to bear an uncanny physical resemblance. Of course, there’s a beautiful woman (Sandra Sinclair) who waited for his return from the war, an endearing old dad (Martin Landau), and the magical Majestic movie house to renovate and reopen. As Appleton’s memory eventually catches up to him, however, The Majestic veers off toward Mr. Smith Goes to Washington territory, complete with a monologue on the First Amendment. Unfortunately, despite the film’s earnest striving to be Capra-esque and Carrey’s undeniable star quality, the charm is more reminiscent of Ronald Reagan than Jimmy Stewart. –Fionn Meade
