This gorgeous 1943 family film stars Roddy McDowell as a Colorado rancher’s son who takes a shine to a colt named Flicka and chooses to train her. The boy’s father (Preston Foster) isn’t happy about the idea: the horse is an offspring of a stormy mare who may not be right in the head. For a while, Flicka seems determined to prove the rancher’s point, fiercely resisting young McDowell’s efforts at domestication. But persistence and love win the day, and Flicka grows up to be a magnificent animal and friend. The film was shot by director Harold Schuster and cinematographer Dewey Wrigley as if for the ages, marrying such perfect elements as a Technicolor sweep of the beautiful Rocky Mountains setting with a wonderful story, plus McDowell’s charismatic earnestness. Based on the Mary O’Hara novel, this film was popular enough in its time to inspire a couple of sequels, though the original best stands up as a perennially worthy adventure tale for kids ages 5 and up. –Tom Keogh

Made during the heyday of Hollywood anthology films (such as O. Henry’s Full House and Tales of Manhattan), this meandering movie is wound around the adventures of a lowly classified-ad clerk (Burgess Meredith, who also produced) who plays roving “man on the street reporter” for a day. He asks the question, “What influence has a baby had on your life?” and gets a collection of comical responses. Hapless jazz musicians Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart mistake the word “baby” for “babe” and describe how a shapely trumpet-playing dish upended their lives, movie star Dorothy Lamour remembers how a child star turned an Iowa day player into a South Seas screen goddess, and Fred MacMurray tells a story suspiciously similar to “The Ransom of Red Chief.” It’s fun to see Fonda stumble and stammer through a slapstick performance and Lamour spoof her Polynesian Princess image, but it’s a lightweight lark with only fitfully funny stories.

Officially credited to King Vidor and Leslie Fenton, it also received uncredited assistance from John Huston and George Stevens in the Fonda-Stewart story. None of them show much facility for slapstick and their styles never meld. The film lurches from one gag to another, only settling down for MacMurray’s story, where his easy delivery and chemistry with future “My Three Sons” costar William Demarest overcomes the clumsy direction. Paulette Goddard also rises above her material in a small role as Meredith’s sharp and sexy wife. –Sean Axmaker

Summary of Illuminata:

John Turturro’s homage to the world of theatrical make-believe may fall short of the shining beacons of this Shakespearean genre–Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander and Jean Renoir’s The Golden Coach, for two–but his Illuminata casts considerable sweetness and light of its own. Mostly set in a teeming warren of private and performance spaces within a turn-of-the-century theater, the film follows the fluctuating fortunes of playwright Tuccio (Turturro), his lover-muse-leading lady (Katherine Borowitz, Turturro’s offscreen wife), and their colorful company: Rufus Sewell and Georgina Cates, youthful, less wise projections of playwright and muse; Ben Gazzara as a grizzled old thespian forgetful of the line between reality and performance; Bill Irwin as the naive bit player who catches the hungry eye of Christopher Walken’s deliciously over-the-top, acid-tongued critic; Susan Sarandon as a calculatingly seductive diva fighting her age; and commedia dell’arte types Aida Turturro and Leo Bassi. Tuccio’s dying to get his play on the boards, but as theater owners Beverly D’Angelo (she of the endearing overbite) and Donal McCann (late star of Irish cinema, and of John Huston’s The Dead) reasonably point out, his delicate fantasy about love and illusion lacks an ending. Zigzagging through Midsummer Night’s Dream misunderstandings and misalliances, slipping seamlessly from mundane into artifice and back again, Illuminata wends its way toward Tuccio’s bittersweet denouement. In Mac, his directorial debut, Turturro paid heartfelt tribute to his own blue-collar dad; this sophomore effort (cowritten with friend and fellow director Brandon Cole) glows with warm affection for audiences, actors, and those who dream their plays. –Kathleen Murphy

For people who’ve discovered Jackie Chan through his American hit Rush Hour and want to learn what his Hong Kong movies are like, Project A is an excellent place to start. Chan plays a sailor in 19th-century Hong Kong; pirates have been terrorizing the seas for months, and all efforts to combat them have been sabotaged by the corrupt chief of police and a criminal gang, who are in cahoots with the pirates. But the plot is hardly the point–a Jackie Chan movie is about astonishingly acrobatic action sequences and breathtaking stunts, and Project A has plenty. Of particular interest is a bicycle chase that is more suspenseful than any car chase you’ve ever seen. Chan is joined by Sammo Hung (star of TV’s Martial Law) as a shifty con man who comes through when the chips are down. Project A also features Yuen Biao, a frequent costar in Chan’s movies, who’s yet another astounding martial artist. But what separates Jackie Chan movies from other kung fu flicks is his sense of humor; every fight scene is punctuated by something–a clever use of a prop or sudden reversal of your expectations–that will make you bark with laughter. Sometimes it’s just so exquisitely choreographed that the entire movie seems to float on a cloud of giddy delight. Purists may object to the movie being dubbed, but given the overall hamminess of the acting, it’s not particularly intrusive. Jackie Chan is often compared to the classic silent comedians for his grace and timing–he lives up to it. –Bret Fetzer
