Running Wild - How to Watch Quality Movies Online

Deep in Zimbabwe is Hwange National Park, over 5,000 square miles of wildlife preserve with a huge population of elephants. When Major Matt Robinson accepts a commission from the United Nations to study the movement of elephants with the International Wildlife Organization, his only condition is that his children Nicholas and Angela go with him. On their first night in camp, the trio encounters a baby elephant injured by poachers. Angela is instantly drawn to the animal and discovers she has an inherent gift for working with animals. This incident results in a trip to the local animal orphanage, where they become acquainted with Rachael Thompson, and sparks a family mission to stop the poachers. Through the family’s growing friendship with the Zimbabwean Ngoi, his son Isaac, and Rachael, they discover that a seemingly generous benefactor is really behind the poaching of the elephants. Ultimately, it’s up to Nicholas, Angela, and Isaac to stop the poachers. This is more than a wonderful story about the protected wildlife of Zimbabwe and the fragile nature of its existence; it’s also a heartwarming story about a man devoted to his children. The photography is nothing short of breathtaking–especially the helicopter shots of animals running wild on the plains. Dande, the injured baby elephant, will win your heart instantly. Hanging out at an Italian villa with Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida sounds like a painless way to kill a vacation–and Come September is a pretty painless movie, too. Rock is a millionaire who spends a month at his home on the Riviera every year, except this year he’s come early and surprised his staff, who’ve been running the place as a paying hotel. This is one of those comedies of sexual frustration–Rock can’t get alone with Gina, because the “hotel” is overrun with American teenagers (chief among them Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, who married after meeting on the shoot). The plot is labored, and director Robert Mulligan shows little feel for farce (he would shortly hit his stride with To Kill a Mockingbird). At least the location shooting has a nice summer breeze to it, and Darin sings “Multiplication” in a nightclub, complete with hepcat moves. –Robert Horton

They don’t really make many romantic comedies like Notting Hill anymore–blissfully romantic, sincerely sweet, and not grounded in any reality whatsoever. After another contrived meet-cute involving spilled orange juice, William and Anna share a spontaneous kiss (big suspension of disbelief required here), and soon both are smitten. The question is, of course, can William and Anna reconcile his decidedly commonplace bookseller existence and her lifestyle as a jet-setting, paparazzi-stalked celebrity? (Take a wild guess at the answer.) Smartly scripted by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and directed by Roger Michell (Persuasion), Notting Hill is hardly realistic, but as wish fulfillment and a romantic comedy, it’s irresistible. True, Roberts doesn’t really have to stretch very far to play a big-time actress who makes $15 million per movie, but she’s more winning and relaxed than she’s been in years, and Grant is sweetly understated as a man blindsided by love. Together, in moments of quiet, they’re a charming couple, and you can feel her craving for real love and his awe and amazement at the wonderful person for whom he has fallen. The only blight on the film is its overbearing pop soundtrack, though Elvis Costello’s heart-wrenching version of “She” gets poignant exposure. With Rhys Ifans as Grant’s scene-stealing, slovenly housemate and Alec Baldwin in a sly, perfectly cast cameo. –Mark Englehart

Summary of Hammerboy:

The Korean feature Hammerboy (2003) was adapted from a popular manhwa (graphic novel) by Youngman Hur. In 2112, Mangchi, a pint-sized hero who’s more enthusiastic than bright, lives in a setting that recalls Waterworld: a small colony on an island formed by two ruined skyscrapers. His grandfather forges the hammers Mangchi loves to play with, and instructs him in the “Great Echo,” a way of focusing all the body’s energy into a yell that serves as a weapon. When Princess Poplar crash lands near the colony, Mangchi has to help her against the power-hungry minister Moonk, who’s trying to seize the throne.

The filmmakers cram far too much story into 75 minutes, leaving the characters underdeveloped and big chunks of the plot unresolved and unexplained. Like other recent Korean features, Hammerboy borrows heavily from Japanese animation, especially the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Director Taekun An lifts elements from Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, and Kiki’s Delivery Service, but it’s all pastiche. Hammerboy is no deeper than an episode of Digimon.
