Robert Preston stars as the stranger who plots a revenge on the hypocritical residents by promising a fortune to the citizens who once showed him charity many years before. One by one the stranger tempts the leading citizens to scheme for the money- until Hadleyburg’s honest reputation is mud before the world.

Based on one of Mark Twain’s best-known short stories, The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg is a cynical, yet humorous view of life in America’s small towns-a life that the acerbic Mr. Twain knew only too well.

Before Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi, Mexicans in North American action films were typically maids, drug dealers, or prison inmates. Even if the Cisco Kid was a friend of yours, you handled a dust cloth or a Mac-10 if you lasted in Hollywood longer than a New York minuto. But when El Mariachi crossed the border in 1992, things changed. Granted, it still involved a drug lord in a shoot-em-up, bang-bang, but this time the good guy was a Mexican. Austin-based Rodriguez made El Mariachi for a fistful of pesos and a little help from his friends. He wrote, directed, coproduced, edited, and operated the camera. Plus, he assembled a cast that had never acted before to work por nada. All for a paltry $7,000, a milagro without a beanfield war.

Desperado continues the outrageous action adventure. Working with a much bigger budget, Rodriguez returns the nameless mariachi to nonstop action. Again thrust into a world he never made, the hero takes his guitar-case arsenal deep into the criminal labyrinth of Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), el gran chingon of the Mexican drug lords. With an amigo (Steve Buscemi) and a beautiful bookstore owner (Salma Hayek), el mariachi confronts an outrageous cast along the way, including a bartender (Cheech Marin), a drug deal pick-up guy (Quentin Tarantino), and the original mariachi (coproducer Carlos Gallardo) as a new-found compa’. Antonio Banderas has the lead this time, and if he’s not quite up to the challenge, it’s probably because he’s Spanish, not Mexican, a distinction not lost by anyone raised on what the popular media now calls “ethnic food.” That said, Desperado is not to be missed. Using intelligence, romance, and humor–as well as plenty of explosive, surreal violence–Rodriguez again showcases the timeless struggle between the forces of darkness and light. And, in the process, he’s recasting the mold for the contemporary action hero–kids now argue about who gets to play the Mexican. –Stephan Magcosta

In a comeback appearance that led to her short-lived weekly TV show, Judy Garland did a TV special in 1963 that’s now available on video. Garland’s performances are forceful and confident, but, unfortunately, she gets little time to sing by herself; that would come later on her TV show. Instead, she shares most of the time with her two costars: Robert Goulet (a recently minted star, thanks to Broadway’s Camelot) and Phil Silvers (still basking in the popularity of TV’s Sgt. Bilko). This is an intriguing show, if only because it reveals how much more patient TV audiences were in the ’60s. Songs go on at a leisurely pace; at one point, Garland and Goulet sing a love medley that includes five complete songs. There’s also a bizarre sequence in which the trio changes costumes after every song; at one point they warble “If I Had a Hammer” while dressed as beatniks. Garland seems less distracted than on her subsequent TV show, perhaps because she’s sharing the stage with a couple of attention hogs. –Marshall Fine

Pups - The Movie Tells it All

What do you get when a couple of 13-year-olds replay Dog Day Afternoon? The title is a clever pun on the film’s inspirations (there’s also a little of Reservoir Dogs rattling around the back of the picture), but it’s neither a comedy nor a gritty thriller. Young Stevie (Cameron Van Hoy), bored and starved for attention (his mother has left him home alone while she’s off at some New Age retreat), decides to skip school and rob a bank with his reluctant but loyal best friend-girlfriend, Rocky (Mischa Barton). Within minutes they’re surrounded by cops and calling for pizzas and MTV (a sly, smarmy cameo by MTV reporter Kurt Loder) through tired FBI hostage negotiator Burt Reynolds. It’s like some video game fantasy come to life, and the growing media circus gives these heretofore neglected kids their 15 minutes of fame and a sudden (if fleeting) power. Writer-director Ash (Bang) doesn’t quite pull it all together, and it drags some at 100 minutes, but the meandering narrative mirrors the hairpin emotional turns of the kids while Ash’s handheld camerawork and long unbroken shots capture the chaos of the situation with easy understatement. The kids are sharply drawn and startlingly refreshing, a testament to Ash’s savvy writing and direction and to the skills of Van Hoy and Barton. It’s a smartly made film, subtly satirical, pleasantly unexplained by any confessional motivations, and happily free of moralizing. –Sean Axmaker

It Should Happen to You proves that the concept of “being famous for being famous” did not arrive with Angelyne or Paris Hilton. This comedy was designed for the dumb-blonde talents of the expert Judy Holliday, re-uniting with Born Yesterday writer Garson Kanin and director George Cukor. She’s in prime form, and some of her scenes with Jack Lemmon (his film debut) have a spritzy give-and-take. (Alas, his character, a documentary filmmaker, is a bit of a nag.) The media satire is a little dated, from a 21st-century perspective, and a subplot with soap magnate Peter Lawford doesn’t wash. The pleasures are in Cukor’s airy Manhattan location shots and Holliday’s offbeat line readings, her lasting gift from a brief career. –Robert Horton
