The Hottest State - An Extraordinary Movie

At first glance, Ethan Hawke’s follow-up to Chelsea Walls is the ballad of a self-absorbed actor and an enigmatic singer. Below the surface, things are more complicated. An adaptation of his 1996 novel, The Hottest State feels more like an exorcism than a love story. Twenty-year-old William (Mark Webber, Broken Flowers), a Texan based in New York, falls for Sarah (Catalina Sandino Moreno, Maria Full of Grace) moments after meeting her. In an instant, they’ve shacked up together, but she refuses to sleep with him. When he lands a job in Mexico, she agrees to come along, and they finally consummate their relationship. After that, though, she starts to withdraw. The more she moves away, the more desperate William becomes. As depictions of young love go, this one is more painful to watch than most, not because the acting is bad–the cast includes Hawke as William’s father, Laura Linney as his mother, and Sonia Braga as Sarah’s mother–but because a little William goes a long way. Aside from his anger control issues, he never stops talking. The entire story feels heavily autobiographical, down to William bragging to Sarah that he’s a great actor. Assuming the young Hawke was just as boorish, the unvarnished honesty of his portrayal is to be commended. No doubt the writing of the book and directing of the film has helped him to move on, but that doesn’t make The Hottest State comfortable viewing–though Jesse Harris’s tuneful soundtrack helps to smooth the way. –Kathleen C. In 1992, The Lawnmower Man was hailed as a CGI (computer-generated image) breakthrough. It’s fascinating to consider it in a historical context, knowing it came just a year after Terminator 2: Judgment Day and was followed by Jurassic Park a year later. Written and directed by Brett Leonard, The Lawnmower Man focuses on a scientist (Pierce Brosnan) trying to utilize technology for governmental gain. As with all top-secret government projects in the movies, it goes horribly wrong. Forced to progress from a chimp to a human subject, Brosnan secretly recruits local backwards boy and lawnmower pusher Jobe (Jeff Fahey). The increases in intelligence are alarming. He learns Latin in two hours, becomes an object of sexual desire (apparently all it takes is cowboy boots), and then develops telepathic and telekinetic abilities. What the film ought to be remembered and appreciated for are the visuals, which undoubtedly advanced the arcade and home computer game industry. –Paul Tonks

Subtitled The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh, this video compilation is an unapologetic, self-produced valentine by and for Mackintosh, England’s most omnipresent theatrical impresario. Conceived and taped as a royal gala for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the production sprints smartly across Mackintosh’s long list of hit musicals and revivals including Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, and Oliver! with a huge principal cast, choruses and dancers, and full orchestra, introduced by Julie Andrews. While no substitute for any of the individual shows represented, Hey Mr. Producer! offers a fast-paced revue aimed at both casual theater fans and devotees of both New York’s Broadway and London’s West End.

The cast spotlights both American and English marquee talent, including both familiar musical troupers and dramatic actors who have proven themselves game, if untutored, singers. Jonathan Pryce (Brazil), who proved himself a latter-day Rex Harrison through 1980s stage hits, is perhaps the most ubiquitous, reprising his turns from Miss Saigon and in Harrison’s signature musical role, Dr. Henry Higgins, from My Fair Lady (inevitably a set-up for Andrews’s arrival onstage). Judi Dench (Mrs. Brown) provides one of the dramatic high points in a devastating reading of “Send in the Clowns,” from Mackintosh’s production of Side by Side by Sondheim. The late Leslie Cheung (Bride With White Hair), the late Anita Mui (Moon Warriors) and Anita Yuen (C’est La Vie, Mon Cheri) all return to this sequel to the smash comedy hit He’s A Woman, She’s A Man, which picks up exactly where the first film left off. Now living with his songwriter boyfriend Sam(Cheung), Wing (Yuen) has also become a popular “male” singer, her female identity well disguised. When Wing unintentionally expressed her love for Sam during an award acceptance speech, Sam has to scramble to find a new girlfriend for his star in order to calm the gay rumors. He finds Fan (Mui), a downstairs neighbor who was once a megastar herself. Complications arise when Fan also falls in love with Wing, not realizing that “he” is actually a “she”. With the recent departures of both Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, Who’s A Woman, Who’s A Man is not only a great followup to the classic gender bender, but also a cherishable memorial to two of Hong Kong’s finest screen legends.
