As an audacious experiment in the art and distribution of motion pictures, Bubble is a twofold triumph. Released on DVD a mere four days after its U.S. theatrical release (in only 32 theaters) in January 2006, this ultra-low-key drama was the first of six films by maverick director Steven Soderbergh (produced in partnership with HDNet Films and 2929 Entertainment, founded by Internet pioneers Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner) to be released simultaneously in theaters, on DVD, and HDNet cable TV, effectively closing the traditional “window” between theatrical and home-video release platforms, and causing many theater owners to boycott the film in protest over its groundbreaking strategy. To accommodate this paradigm-shifting milestone, Soderbergh and Full Frontal screenwriter Coleman Hough reunited to craft a working-class murder mystery that’s perfectly suited to its experimental purpose: Quickly shot on high definition video, it’s a riveting 72-minute exercise in minimal style, located in the depressed border town of Belpre, Ohio, and employing non-actors from the region who played an active role in creating their mundane everyday dialogue.

Chubby, middle-aged Martha (Debbie Doebereiner) and twentysomething slacker Kyle (Dustin James Ashley) work in a drab doll factory, molding and assembling rubber doll parts, passing dreary lunch-hours with small talk and clinging to modest dreams that will never come true. When an attractive single mother named Rose (Misty Dawn Wilkins) is hired as a temporary employee, Martha’s secretly possessive affection for Kyle is silently challenged, leading to an act of violence that obliterates their daily routine. In dramatizing this passive love triangle, Soderbergh (serving, under pseudonyms, as his own cinematographer and editor) emphasizes the stilted, soul-crushing rhythms of lives that have been stunted by loneliness and isolation; they live in a bubble, as it were, and Bubble is arresting in its visual precision, finding unexpected beauty in physical and emotional bleakness. Obviously not the kind of film that draws a blockbuster audience, Bubble exists on its own terms, capable of captivating a receptive audience, regardless of format or context, without losing its experimental edge. By its third season, the daffy 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie just got sillier–which is not necessarily a bad thing. Given that the show’s premise involves a half-naked woman subservient to an astronaut, we’re clearly watching a rampant male fantasy to begin with; it’s the goofiness (ably executed by the stars) that gives the show charm instead of smarm. So bring on the evil twin sister, Jeannie 2; the Hawaiian royalty; guest appearances by Don Rickles, Paul Lynde, and Milton Berle; an epic (for a sitcom) four-episode story about Jeannie being trapped in a safe that’s about to be sent to the moon; the groovy rock band (in an episode featuring record producer Phil Spector, later to become a gun-toting recluse, as himself)…it’s all turned into a delirious soup of 1960s farce by Barbara Eden (who perfected the combination of sexy/ditzy long before Jenna Elfman or Jessica Simpson), Larry Hagman (one of the nicest guys on TV until he became ubervillian JR Ewing on Dallas), Bill Daily (among the greatest second bananas of all time), Hayden Rorke (the perpetually stymied Dr. Bellows), and Emmaline Henry (Mrs. Bellows, a hip and sexy older woman in the decade that launched the idolization of youth). I Dream of Jeannie scrupulously avoided political or social relevance–when Mrs. Bellows thinks that Jeannie is a young woman enslaved by Major Nelson and tries to rescue her, this troubling idea is played for laughs–but that puts the show in an engaging bubble of entertainment, as out-of-synch with its own era as much as with ours. –Bret Fetzer

Australian director Paul Cox has not fashioned a biography of Russian ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky (1880-1950), nor is this a comprehensive survey of Nijinsky’s influential works. Instead, Cox ventures deeply into Nijinsky’s thoughts and emotions as expressed in diaries begun in 1919, just as the once world-famous dancer began his descent into… insanity? The question is valid, for what we witness here–eloquently expressed through Derek Jacobi’s sublime readings of Nijinsky’s diaries–are the musings of an artist who lost touch with reality, only to rediscover a kind of glorious divinity in the intensity of his own feelings. Cox accompanies the diaries with his own interpretive dance of imagery, archival photos, and performed excerpts of Nijinsky’s dances, all set beautifully to perfectly chosen classical music. In this sequel to The Secret Garden, set in 1946, an American orphan named Lizzie (Camilla Belle) gets to live at Misselthwaite Manor in England courtesy of Mary Craven (Cherie Lunghi), who grew up there. It’s now an orphanage and Martha Sowerby (Joan Plowright) has become headmistress. Although the garden is no longer secret, neither is it as lush as it became under Mary’s care. Because Lizzie also has a green thumb, Miss Sowerby allows her to work on it during Sundays, but it’s off limits to children the rest of the week. Lizzie just can’t stay away, so she breaks the rules and gets in trouble. By the end, she has found a way–with Miss Sowerby’s permission–to make the garden bloom again. Although this film lacks the suspense of The Secret Garden, it’s faithful to the spirit of the original and is suitable for the whole family. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
